MBMA began offering faculty fellowships in 2015 in cooperation with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). This groundbreaking educational initiative expedited the development of a model program that partners the metal building industry with undergraduate engineering and architectural faculty and students. The fellowships have assisted the selected faculty in developing senior design classes (often referred to as capstone courses) that focus on metal building projects.

Nationwide, severe weather and geological events are causing astronomical property damage. The consequence: communities strained by a loss of resources, security and access to shelter. Certain areas are so devastated that recovery seems next to impossible (think New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005). For other communities, an increased awareness sets in, inspiring citizens to turn disaster into opportunity—to rebuild better and stronger.

The turn of a new year is a time when many industry associations get together for their annual meetings—hopefully someplace warm. It is therefore a great time to talk to members and get a pulse on the year that was and the year to come. At the 2018 Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., I would describe the mood of our members as cautiously optimistic. There are a number of factors affecting that mood.
